Father of the Bride Overview:

Father of the Bride (1950) was a Comedy - Romance Film directed by Vincente Minnelli and produced by Pandro S. Berman.

The film was based on the novel of the same name written by Edward Streeter published in 1949.

SYNOPSIS

The comic trials and tribulations that beset a family, mostly the father, prior to their daughter's wedding day. Taylor and Tracy give wonderful performances and it's so effortlessly charming, it's easy to understand why this was remade in 1991.

Father of the Bride Facts
The premiere of this film took place two days after Elizabeth Taylor's real-life marriage to "Nicky" Conrad Hilton Jr.. The publicity surrounding the event is credited with helping to make the film so successful.
In the film, one of the gifts Kay gets as a present is a Venus de Milo statue with a clock in the stomach, which Spencer Tracy refers to as a "stinker". This same gift makes its' way into the 1991 re-make among the presents, and is still not received well.
"Theater Guild on the Air" broadcast a 60 minute radio adaptation of the movie on February 25, 1951 with Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett and Elizabeth Taylor reprising their film roles.
Jack Benny badly wanted the lead role but was deemed unsuitable.
MGM gave Elizabeth Taylor a wedding gift of a one-off wedding dress designed by Edith Head (a move also designed to promote the film).
