The play opened on Broadway in New York City, New York, USA on 30 October 1934 and closed in January 1935 after 104 performances. The opening night cast included Henry Fonda, Margaret Hamilton and Francis Pierlot.
News items and studio publicity reported that the opening title cards of the Erie Canal during different seasons was painted by noted artist Albert J. Kramer, and that the double wedding ceremony at the end was styled by art director Addison Hehr to resemble Grant Woods' painting of "Farm House."
Of Betty Grable's 29 feature-film appearances from 1940 through 1955, only this movie did not play at the Roxy Theatre in New York City. Instead, this picture opened at the Globe Theatre on June 12, 1953. Note: Miss Grable's How to Marry a Millionaire had its Manhattan premiere simultaneously at the Roxy and the Globe on November 12, 1953.
