Despite coming to films in her thirties, she quickly became Britain's (and, briefly, the world's) highest-paid film star, cruising her chirpy personality through a series of soft-centered, artfully-contrived tragi-comedies. Lost her popularity (and her British film career) when deciding to live abroad during World War II. Married (second of three) director/comedian Monty Banks (1897-1950). Created Dame in 1979. She maintained with cabaret performances and musical tours.
Suffered from cancer of the cervix in 1939 and nearly died, but it went into remission following an operation. She received over 250,000 "get-well" cards.
Bing Crosby's last concert was in Brighton, England on October 12, 1977, two days before his death. Gracie was in attendance and Crosby's very last photograph was taken with her.
