Bubbling, dark-haired British comedian/singer, whose Lancashire-slanted mixture of comic songs and romantic ballads made her the most popular recording star of her day. Despite coming to films in her thirties, she quickly became Britain's (and, briefly, the world's) highest-paid film star, cruising her chirpy personality through a series of soft-centered, artfully-contrived tragi-comedies. Lost her popularity (and her British film career) when deciding to live abroad during World War II. Married (second of three) director/comedian Monty Banks (1897-1950). Created Dame in 1979. A symbol of courage and hope, and a huge, sentimental favorite during Depression-riddled England, her popularity ended abruptly when she moved to the United States during the war years, never quite winning her public back even when she returned. She maintained with cabaret performances and musical tours.
Suffered from cancer of the cervix in 1939 and nearly died, but it went into remission following an operation. She received over 250,000 "get-well" cards.
Gracie's first 'serious' stage role was 'Her Last Affaire (1936)' but she was dropped from the film version and her role was taken by Googie Withers.
