Lord Byron swam all the way down the Grand Canal from the Lido in 1818, a distance of more than four miles (6.5 kilometres). His most famous swim was in April 1810 when he swam across the Hellespont, the mile-wide (1.6 kilometre) channel that separates European Turkey from Asiatic Turkey.
