The Babe Ruth Story (1948) was a Sports - Biographical Film directed by Roy Del Ruth and produced by Roy Del Ruth and Joe Kaufmann.

SYNOPSIS

An extremely sympathetic portrait of the legendary "Babe," which follows him from his troubled childhood to his last heroic day. Bendix portrays the fictional Bambino, re-creating the most memorable highlights of his life, intermingled with actual clips of Ruth in action, adding a documentary feel to the picture.

The Babe Ruth Story Facts
"The Screen Guild Theater" broadcast a 30 minute radio adaptation of the movie on Thursday, October 21st, 1948, with William Bendix and Charles Bickford reprising their film roles.
William Bendix actually hit a ball over the right field fence, (he was the first actor to do so).
The scenes at Yankee Stadium were shot and filmed, just hours before a real baseball game was scheduled to take place, and Babe Ruth got up from his death bed, just long enough, to see it, while he was still alive.
The film was rushed for release while Babe Ruth himself was still alive, which is why the movie ended the way it did. George Herman Ruth lived just 21 days after seeing the premiere, that he attended, on Monday, July 26th, 1948. He lost his life on Monday, August 16th, 1948.
