A boundlessly energetic musical romance, based on Max Shulman's book, which saw the creation of that archetypical girl-watcher Dobie Gillis. Sparkling tunes, freewheeling dancing, and teen comedy earned Dobie a TV series in 1959, where Dwayne Hickman took over the duties that Van introduced here.

This modest (by MGM standards) black-and-white musical failed to be noted by a contemporary New York Times review. In addition, this was the only monochrome song-and-dance picture in which Debbie Reynolds and Bob Fosse appeared.
At a couple of points in the movie, Dobie and Pansy duet on "All I Do is Dream of You." Debbie Reynolds (Pansy) sang the same number, with chorus girls, in Singin' in the Rain.
