SYNOPSIS
In this most unusual melodrama by director Ford, he keeps the sentiment in check as he unfolds a truly touching story. A possessive mother (theater diva Crosman) sends her son to war to separate him from his girlfriend (Nixon), unaware that she is pregnant. After he is killed, she travels to France with other Gold Star Mothers and meets a young couple, seemingly doomed to follow in the steps of her lost child. By sharing experiences with other bereaved mothers, she finds it in herself to help the lovers and reconcile with Nixon and her grandson.
