Notorious Overview:

Notorious (1946) was a Film Noir - Romance Film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and produced by Alfred Hitchcock.

The film was based on the serial (2-part story) The Song of the Dragon written by John Taintor Foote published in The Saturday Evening Post in Nov 1921.

SYNOPSIS

In one of the most stylish works by the master of suspense, American agent Grant gets the assignment to watch international playgirl Bergman, whose father is a Nazi sympathizer. He soon realizes she abhors his beliefs and they begin to work in tandem, an assignment that means she must marry Nazi agent Rains in Rio despite their mutual attraction. When Rains becomes suspicious of Bergman, he begins slowly poisoning her, and Grant comes to the rescue. The intricate plot revolves around Rain's hoard of uranium, a top-secret material at the time, and a plot point that earned writer Hecht and Hitch an F.B.I. tail during production. This also features one of Hitchcock's greatest shots, the descending crane shot from the top of a grand staircase to the key to Rains's wine cellar held tight in Bergman's hand. The laserdisc edition includes audio commentary and production background, with a theatrical trailer, telecast clips, deleted scenes from the script with stills, and the Lux Radio Theatre Broadcast.

Notorious was inducted into the National Film Registry in 2006.

Notorious Facts
After filming had ended, Cary Grant kept the famous UNICA key. A few years later he gave the key to his great friend and co-star Ingrid Bergman, saying that the key had given him luck and hoped it would do the same for her. Decades later at a tribute to their director Alfred Hitchcock, Bergman went off-script and presented the key to him, to his surprise and delight.
Producer David O. Selznick originally wanted Vivien Leigh to play Alicia.
Lester Dorr was cast as a motorcycle policeman but was cut from the released print.
Alfred Hitchcock: About an hour in, at the party in Alexander Sebastian's mansion, Hitchcock gets a glass of champagne from the bartender and quickly turns to the left and walks off screen.
