Keeper of the Flame Overview:

Keeper of the Flame (1943) was a Drama - Black-and-white Film directed by George Cukor and produced by Victor Saville and Leon Gordon.

SYNOPSIS

An interesting look at public images and private lives. Tracy is a reporter assigned to write a piece about a recently deceased, beloved American patriot. Hepburn is the widow who continues to protect the public from the secret life behind the facade. The reporter's story gets complicated when he falls for the widow. Tracy and Hepburn in the able hands of Cukor, with a script by writer Stewart (The Philadelphia Story, 1940) based on the story by A.I.R. Wylie.

Louis B. Mayer was very unhappy about the film's political content, thinking it noncommercial. Katharine Hepburn too felt that the storyline was too dull and needed to be pepped up with some romance. She complained to producer Victor Saville about this but he ignored her comments, so Hepburn went directly to Mayer who was only too happy to make the film into a more conventional Hollywood romance.
