Justine Overview:

Justine (1969) was a Drama - Horror Film directed by George Cukor and Joseph Strick (uncredited) and produced by Pandro S. Berman and Kathryn Hereford.

SYNOPSIS

Cukor's valiant attempt to tame Durrell's dense, colorful Alexandria Quartet. An international cast do their best to imbue this with the simmering sexuality and alluring mystery of the novels, but the result suffers from the confusion many experienced with the books. Aimee is properly sultry in the role of a Middle Eastern prostitute married to one of Egypt's wealthiest bankers in pre-WWII Alexandria. With her husband's consent, she continues to inflame other men and is also deeply involved in a plot to arm Palestinian Jews about to revolt against English rule.

Anouk Aimee couldn't bear being without her lover and future husband Albert Finney during location shooting and wanted to leave. Director George Cukor persuaded her friend Omar Sharif to convince her of the dire consequences for her career if she did. Although Sharif failed, Finney was able to convince her to finish the film.
Joseph Strick was originally hired to direct but was fired after refusing to cast anyone but Glenda Jackson in the lead role. He was replaced by George Cukor.
