Adapted as a Broadway musical ("Georgy"), opening at the Winter Garden Theater in New York on February 26, 1970 and running for 4 performances. Dilys Watling as the title character was nominated for the 1970 Tony Award (New York City) for Actress in a Musical.
Lynn Redgrave's Best Actress Oscar nomination for this movie coincided with sister Vanessa Redgrave's similar nomination for Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment. Such a coincidence had occurred only once before when sisters Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland respectively vied for the Best Actress Oscar for Suspicion and Hold Back the Dawn. Fontaine was the only winner of the four actresses in this particular curiosity.
Vanessa Redgrave backed out of the role of Georgy just before shooting started. Lynn Redgrave (her sister) picked it up.
The hit theme song "(Hey There) Georgy Girl" was co-written by Jim Dale, who would later gain fame through several "Carry On" films, 1970's Disney Studio comedies, and Tony winning and nominated Broadway roles. He's also noted as the reader of the U.S. versions of the Harry Potter audio books, as well as the narrator of Pushing Daisies.
