Annette Vadim was originally to play the leading lady Françoise Fayol but had to withdraw due to illness.
The film is held in the National Film and Television Archive in the UK but had never been shown in America until 2004 or released on home video.
Ken Russell described in a book that the film premiered in London in 1964. The audiences were not pleased with Russell, even the projectionists were criticizing it. Russell sat through the after party isolated and spent the same night drinking between the local bars. He later announced that he never wanted to do a feature again and started working for the BBC.
On 22nd August 2008 after completion of the film 44 years ago, Ken Russell returned to Herne Bay to introduce a special one night outdoor screening of French Dressing in the Memorial Park as part of the Herne Bay Festival 2008.
There is a missing scene between where Françoise agrees to join Jim and Henry at their place. This was Ken Russell's favorite scene in the entire movie but it was dropped by the producers, hence the unexplained cut between France and the pier of Gormleigh.
