Black Friday (1940) was a Drama - Horror Film directed by Arthur Lubin .

SYNOPSIS

When a professor gets seriously hurt in a car crash with a gangster, a surgeon (Karloff) makes a risky, desperate decision: he saves his friend's life by transferring the brain of a dying gangster into the professor's body. But the surgeon's original good intentions fade when he learns that, embedded in the criminal's brain, is information regarding a hidden fortune. Determined to get the money, the doctor manipulates his patient into temporarily assuming the gangster's personality, and the criminal mind takes over, seeking revenge on a rival gangster (Lugosi). Neat mystery tale with horror overtones added by presence of monster-movie stars.

According to contemporary publicity reports, Bela Lugosi was put under hypnosis by technical advisor Manley P. Hall to make his death scene more realistic and harrowing.
Originally budgeted at $130,750.
Despite problems with Boris Karloff, who steadfastly insisted that the studio comply with the union-mandated eight-hour day (a rule largely ignored, except when a major star demanded compliance), director Arthur Lubin was able to bring the picture in on schedule and $5,000 under budget.
Shooting lasted from December 28, 1939-January 18, 1940, released March 21.
Part of the SON OF SHOCK package of 21 titles released to television in 1958, which followed the original SHOCK THEATER release of 52 features one year earlier.
