Bedtime for Bonzo (1951) was a Comedy - Family Film directed by Frederick de Cordova and produced by Michael Kraike.

SYNOPSIS

It's nature vs. nurture as Reagan steals a chimp to prove to his would-be father-in-law that love and a proper upbringing can improve on one's genetic inheritance. Though he provides love and understanding, the chimp unleashes no end of havoc. Perfectly good fun (though somewhat unsettling seeing the future commander in chief nursemaid to a chimp) directed by longtime Tonight Show producer De Cordova.

Often used by Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show when Ronald Reagan was president partly because the former president was directed by Frederick De Cordova who was also the director of The Tonight Show.
During the 1980 US Presidential campaign when Ronald Reagan was the Republican nominee; this film suddenly became extremely popular again and was frequently shown on television. The joke in Washington was that "Bedtime for Bonzo" was a "favorite of old movie buffs and Democrats".
