A Time to Love and a Time to Die (1958) was a Drama - Romance Film directed by Douglas Sirk and produced by Robert Arthur.

SYNOPSIS

Sirk's brooding romance set among the ruins of war reflects the troubling experience of his early career in Nazi Germany. Gavin portrays a German soldier on furlough who discovers that his town has been destroyed and that his parents are missing. As he searches for traces of his former life, he falls in love with the daughter of his family's doctor (Pulver). They marry, a hopeful, forlornly romantic gesture as they know he must return to the Russian front and she's unlikely to survive the collapse of their homeland. Based on a novel by Remarque, who has a small cameo role.

This is one of few American or occidental war or World War II films where the focus, subject or main characters were the enemy (i.e. in this case German and not American nor their Allies).
This movie is novelist Erich Maria Remarque's only ever on-screen performance.
Douglas Sirk and Erich Maria Remarque became close friends during the shooting. Later, in Switzerland, they were even neighbors.
