British character actress whose best-known film role as Robert Newton's downtrodden wife of 'Hatter's Castle' (1941), typecast her in similar parts thereafter. During her lengthy career, she portrayed a host of long-suffering housekeepers, landladies or spinster aunts and was Aggie the junk dealer, who supplies a lethal dagger to Michael Gough, proprietor of the 'Horrors of the Black Museum' (1959).
Started out as a girl soprano and instrumentalist at the age of 14
